Yes, you can sell ebooks on Etsy. They sell as digital downloads: the buyer pays, Etsy gives them the file, and you never print or post anything. The same goes for printable coloring pages, planners, workbooks and guides.
What sells on Etsy is a little different from what sells on Amazon. Etsy buyers are browsing for something useful, pretty or giftable, and they judge a listing by its pictures first. A plain text ebook can do well, but a workbook, a printable or a guide with a clear purpose usually suits the place better.
What to sell
- A practical guide as a PDF. One problem, solved: “Meal prep for one on a budget”, “Your first 30 days with a rescue dog”. A PDF looks the same on every device, which is what buyers expect.
- A workbook or planner. Exercises, prompts, checklists and space to write. People print these, which makes them feel like a real object.
- Printable coloring pages. A themed set (“10 cosy autumn scenes”) or a whole book as a PDF to print at home. Kids’ sets, adult relaxation sets and seasonal packs are all common.
- A bundle. A guide plus its workbook, or a coloring set plus a bonus page. Bundles give the buyer more for one decision.
Not sure what yours should be about? Ebook ideas that sell has a three-question test to run before you make anything.
1. Prepare the files
- Ebooks and guides as PDF, not EPUB. Most Etsy buyers open files on a laptop or phone, or print them, and a PDF works everywhere without an app.
- Coloring pages as a print-ready PDF at letter size, one page per sheet, with a margin so home printers don’t clip the edges. Add a set of high-resolution images too, for people who want to print on other paper.
- Keep files within Etsy’s limits. Etsy limits how many files a listing can have and how large each can be — check the current limits in the listing form. A ZIP of high-resolution pages can get large; compress it, or split a big set across two files.
- Name files clearly: “cosy-autumn-coloring-pages-print.pdf”, not “final-v3.pdf”. It is the first thing the buyer sees after paying.
2. Write the listing
- 1Title: say what it is and who it is for, in the words a buyer would search: “Printable Ocean Animals Coloring Pages for Kids 4–8, 20 Pages, Instant Download”.
- 2Type: choose digital files, so Etsy delivers the download automatically.
- 3Description: what they get, how many pages, the format and paper size, how to download and print, and that no physical item is shipped. Answer the questions people would otherwise message you about.
- 4Tags: Etsy gives you 13. Use phrases (“adult coloring pages”, “printable workbook”), not single words, and don’t repeat your title word for word.
- 5Price: look at what similar listings charge, and how many reviews they have. A new shop often starts a little lower to win its first reviews.
3. Make listing images that sell
On Etsy, pictures do most of the selling. A digital listing still needs several images, and each should answer a question:
- First image: the cover or a spread of pages, big and clear, with a short line of text (“20 printable pages”). It has to work as a small thumbnail in search.
- Inside pages: two or three real pages, so buyers know exactly what they get.
- What’s included: the number of pages, the file types and the sizes, in one image.
- How it works: buy, download, print. Many buyers are new to digital downloads.
4. Etsy’s rules on AI
Etsy allows items designed by the seller with the help of AI, including digital downloads, as long as you say so in the listing. In practice that means choosing the right “made by / designed by” option when you list and stating in the description that AI was used to create the text or the artwork. Listings that hide it can be removed, so be plain about it — it does not stop people buying a useful guide or a lovely set of pages.
The same honesty applies on Amazon: see can you sell AI-written books? for how KDP asks.
5. What Etsy charges
| Fee | Amount (US) | When |
|---|---|---|
| Listing fee | $0.20 | Per listing, renewed every four months or after each sale |
| Transaction fee | 6.5% | Of the sale price |
| Payment processing | 3% + $0.25 | Per order |
| Offsite Ads | 12–15% | Only on sales that came from Etsy’s ads on other sites |
So on a $7 digital download, about $1.10 goes to Etsy in listing, transaction and processing fees, and the rest is yours, before any tax. There is no printing or shipping cost, which is why digital products suit Etsy so well. To compare with other places, the ebook price calculator helps choose a price.
BookArc writes the guide or draws the coloring pages, and gives you the PDF and the page images to upload.
Start for freeEtsy and Amazon at the same time?
Usually, yes. The one thing to watch is exclusivity: if an ebook is enrolled in KDP Select, Amazon asks for it not to be sold as an ebook anywhere else. A printable coloring set on Etsy and a paperback coloring book on Amazon are different products and don’t clash. Selling an ebook without Amazon goes through the trade-offs.
An honest word on results
Etsy has a great many digital listings, and a new shop starts with no reviews. Shops that do well usually keep going: they add listings for the same buyer, improve their photos and titles based on what gets clicked, and share real pages where their buyers already are. It takes time and effort, and nothing about it is guaranteed.
How BookArc helps
For a guide or workbook, you describe it in one sentence, approve the chapter plan, and BookArc writes it and designs a cover; the download menu gives you a PDF to share, plus EPUB and Word. For coloring pages, you choose the theme, age, style and size, and BookArc draws every page in one style; the downloads include a home-print PDF and every page as an image. You still write the listing, take the photos and do the selling — the book is yours.
