Turning your ebook into an audiobook with Virtual Voice

For most self-published authors, an audiobook has never been realistic. A professional narrator for a short non-fiction book costs more than the book is likely to earn, and splitting royalties with one instead means a long wait to find somebody willing to take the gamble.

Amazon’s Virtual Voice changes that arithmetic for some books. It is worth understanding properly before you get excited, because it is a beta with real limits — and a lot of what is being written about it is wrong.

What Virtual Voice is

Virtual Voice is AI narration built into Kindle Direct Publishing. You pick an existing Kindle ebook from your KDP Bookshelf, choose a synthetic voice, and Amazon turns the text into an audiobook that it then sells alongside the ebook.

There is no studio to book and no narrator to hire. According to Amazon, you can create one for free at this time — the "at this time" is Amazon’s wording, and worth taking seriously in a beta. Listeners are told what they are getting: Amazon says audiobooks made this way are clearly labelled as virtual voice.

Who can use it right now

Fewer people than the enthusiasm suggests. Amazon describes it as an invite-only beta for eligible KDP eBooks, on the US marketplace. If you are not already invited, you can join Amazon’s interest list and wait. Amazon also reserves the right to refuse a book or remove an audiobook from sale.

The narration languages Amazon currently lists are American, British and Australian English; Latin American and Castilian Spanish; French; and Italian. A book in any other language cannot be narrated this way yet, however well it sells.

What your ebook needs first

This is the part most coverage skips, and it is where books get stuck. Virtual Voice reads the structure of your ebook to know where chapters begin, so Amazon asks for the file to be built properly before you start:

• A table of contents that is text-based, complete and in the right order — the interactive kind Kindle builds from your file, not a picture of one.
• All of the book’s content inside its chapters.
• Chapter names and numbers written as text, not as images.
• Footnotes formatted as proper superscripts or subscripts.
• Spelling and grammar already corrected — a voice will read a typo exactly as written.

A book designed in a page-layout tool and exported with headings as pictures, or a scanned manuscript, is the usual reason a file fails here. The fix is to rebuild the ebook from the text, not to patch the audio.

For what it is worth, an EPUB exported from BookArc is built this way: every chapter title is real text, each chapter stands on its own, and the file carries a linked text table of contents. How it works, step by step

If your book is eligible, Amazon’s process is short:

1. 1On your KDP Bookshelf, choose "Add Audible audiobook with virtual voice" next to the ebook.
2. 2Pick a voice. Amazon provides samples, and you can set a different voice for each chapter.
3. 3Set a list price for the audiobook, separately from the ebook.
4. 4Preview the narration and fix what sounds wrong — Amazon lets you edit pauses and pronunciation before publishing.
5. 5Publish. Amazon says it can take up to 72 hours to appear in stores.

The step people skip is the fourth one. Names, invented terms, acronyms and anything with a non-obvious pronunciation will be read however the voice guesses. Listening through before publishing is the difference between a usable audiobook and one that gets refunded.

What it pays

The honest way to read that table: this is not a replacement income, it is an extra format for a book you already have. The cost of trying is your time, which makes it worth doing for a book that is already selling, and worth very little for one that is not — an audiobook does not find readers the ebook could not. The bigger question of how books earn at all still applies, and so does the work of getting the first sales.

What you cannot do during the beta

Amazon lists several things that are unavailable to Virtual Voice audiobooks while the beta runs:

• A+ Content — the richer product-page modules — is not available for the audiobook.
• KDP Select promotions are not available.
• Pre-orders are not available.
• While a new audiobook is being published, both it and the ebook are locked for editing.
• Changes to the title, author name or other details have to be made to the ebook first.

You can still promote the audiobook the ordinary ways: on social media, in your newsletter, and with Amazon’s Sponsored Products and Sponsored Brands ads.

When it is the right choice, and when it is not

Synthetic narration is good at clarity and poor at performance. That single difference decides most cases.

None of this is permanent. You can publish a Virtual Voice edition now to learn whether an audience for the audiobook exists, and consider human narration later for a book that proves it deserves one.
